Campus Equity Week to be held October 24-28, 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Campus Equity Week/Fair Employment Week is being held October 24-28, 2011. Activists on campuses across Canada, Mexico, and the United States are organizing events to bring attention to the issues involved in the employment of contingent faculty in institutions of higher education.

Campus Equity Week (CEW) is a time when faculty and students at colleges and universities around the country can educate themselves and their communities about the reality of contingent faculty employment and about the consequences for education, for the profession of teaching, for communities, and for our country.

Activities marking CEW don't have to be as large or as pre-planned as campus rallies and teach-ins, though these events can have a big impact.  Whatever you do to educate a few people or a lot will help.  For example:

  • *Write a letter or op-ed for your campus or local newspaper, individually or with a few colleagues, about why investing in faculty is so important and what the consequences of exploiting faculty have been.
  • *Plan with faculty colleagues and allies to wear a pin or t-shirt that shows that you are, or that you support, non-tenure-track faculty.  Some faculty have embraced the symbol of a scarlet "A" for "Adjunct"; others like our "FTE (Fair Trade in Education) slogan.
  • *Screen a film or host a panel discussion.  Two films, A Simple Matter of Justice and Degrees of Shame, are often shown during Campus Equity Week.  A number of other short films are available on Youtube.
  • *Circulate a petition calling for a renewed commitment to excellence in higher education through fair treatment of all faculty.
  • Hold a legislative forum to to engage with legislators and community members.
